At a meeting of judges summarising the work of the justice system in Russia over the past year, the chairman of the Supreme Court, Vyacheslav Lebedev, noted an increase in the number of cases involving the protection of foreign investors. Partner Egor Chilikov suggested what this may be due to.
Chilikov confirms an explosive growth of disputes “involving foreign persons” in 2020 and 2021. However, the lawyer concedes that the statistics may be distorted by quasi-foreign disputes – those where foreign companies are controlled by Russian citizens and are not truly foreign.
